Standing on the other side of the road to Wild Elephant Valley and looking down over a brook at the bottom of the valley, you may see wild elephants breaking out of bamboo clusters in the dense tropical rain forest.

Statues captivating

Bamboo Temple, one of the
most attractive in Yunnan Province, is not known for its bamboo, but for the stunning    religious figures inside-life-size statues crafted out of clay by Li Guangxiu in the 1880s.

     There may be quicker ways to cover the 15 kilometres between the tourist haven of Dali and Yunnan Province's second largest city, Xiaguan, but none is quite so breathtaking and picturesque  as a trip by a small converted fishing boat on Erhai Lake.

Dongba scripture preserved

The first 50-volume set of "The Completed Translated Works of Dongba Scriptures," with 45 million words, will be published in October. Dongba scriptures are believed to be as old as the inscriptions on bones and tortoise shells from the Shang Dynasty (16th century - 11th century BC).

Visitors to Expo '99 Top 5 Million

The total number of visitors to Expo'99 exceeded 5 million August 11. Since the opening of the Expo '99, travelers to the Garden and Yunnan Province has increased in number continuously. The average daily number of visitors to the Exposition Garden in May, June and July were 24,000, 29,000 and 53,000 respectively.

The mysterious and bewitching Zhongdian County remains a hidden, unspoilt naturalparadise.  Visitors there will  find themselves in a land where mysterious tranquility is harmoniously blended with the ever-changing scenery.
