Editorial Hails Opening of Horti-Expo '99
The opening of the '99 Kunming International Horticultural Exposition( Horti-Expo
'99, Kunming )is a great event for the Chinese people and it serves as a gift for the
Chinese nation in greeting the new century, Our Newspaper says in an editorial published
today.
The editorial, entitled "Scroll Painting Depicting Harmonious Coexistence
between Man and Nature", says the Chinese government has set great store by hosting
the exposition
and the local government has devoted great efforts since June 5,1996 when chairman of the
International Expositions Bureau handed over the exposition flag to the Chinese delegate.
The editorial hails the success of Yunnan Province in the high-standard preparations
in a short span of three years, saying that "it is rare in the world."
The editorial says that the present-day world is facing unprecedented creation and
at the same time unrivaled destruction.
Desertification, El Nino, the hole in the ozone layer,floods and decrease in biodiversity
are threatening the very survival of man.
At the turn of the century, the editorial says, we should pay particular attention
to environmental protection and sustainable
development and to protecting the earth.
The editorial describes the theme of the exposition, "Man and Nature, Marching
into the 21st Century", as a concentrated expression of the aspirations of man to
live harmoniously
together with nature.
The editorial says that the Chinese government has put environmental protection high
on the agenda and made it a state
policy. It has been incorporated into the national program for economic and social
development. The country has also completed a framework of legislation for environmental
protection. The ideas of protecting the environment and resources and seeking a
sustainable development have found their way deep into the hearts of the people. The
country is strengthening international cooperation.
The editorial says that the hosting of the Exposition is a move eof great importance
to implement the sustainable development strategy, adding that it will have a far-reaching
significance in carrying forward the time-honored tradition and culture, displaying the
extensive and profound gardening art,
enhancing the people's awareness of environ-
mental protection and promoting friendly cooperation with other countries. |
