Bird park spreads wings
By Zhao Shaoqin

KUNMING _ There are thousands of flowers, trees, butterflies and fish in the World Horti-Expo Garden _ but there is a definite shortage of birds.
A new park near the World Horti-Expo Garden aims to remedy the situation.
The park, the Bird Appreciation Garden, is located on a hill on the way to the Golden Palace reservoir. It faces the World Horti-Expo Garden across the reservoir.
The 3.2-hectare garden possesses a pool, grasslands, trees, lodges, and grain as food for the birds.
It is an "open" bird garden _ there are no cages or nets to restrict the birds.
All birds can fly in and out of the garden freely, but no bird bred there wants to leave.
It is rumoured the keepers have some special magic tricks to retain the birds.
Currently, the garden accommodates a dozen species of birds, such as white and black swans, egrets and terns.
The park has not yet been officially opened to tourists.
It is expected that over 10,000 birds, of more than 50 species, will eventually set up home in the garden.
