Solar terms

The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. More than 2,000 years ago, ancient Chinese people created this overall framework to mark the annual passage of time based on observations of the sun's motion. Nowadays, the 24 solar terms not only apply to farming, but also guide Chinese people in everyday life.

Calendar for Spring Festival: Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese festival which falls on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. It is known as one of the Four Traditional Chinese Festivals, together with Spring Festival, Tomb Sweeping Day, and Mid-Autumn Festival. Dragon Boat Festival is famous around the world, and some countries and regions outside of China also celebrate it. Since 2008, Dragon Boat Festival has been listed as a national holiday.

Calendar for Spring Festival: Qixi Festival

The Double Seventh Festival, or Qixi Festival, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month. Double Seventh Festival is considered to be the most romantic of traditional Chinese festivals, earning it the title of "Chinese Valentine's Day." This romantic festival has a long history and has been celebrated since the Han Dynasty (202 BC – 220 AD). It was added to the National Intangible Cultural Heritage List by the State Council of China in 2006.

As the natural satellite of the earth, the moon is a central element to different folklore and traditions throughout human history. In many prehistoric and ancient cultures, the moon was personified as a deity or other supernatural phenomenon, while for Chinese people, an important festival exists for the moon, the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also known as the mooncake festival.

Calendar for Spring Festival: Chongyang Festival

China's Chongyang Festival, also known as the Double Ninth Festival, takes place every year between October 1 and October 30 on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. This year, the festival falls on October 4. It is a traditional folk holiday focused on good health and long life, and involves a variety of festivities.
