On March 17, giant panda Fuwa gave birth to a pair of male twin cubs at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in Chengdu, the capital city of southwest China’s Sichuan province, according to the research base.

The first cub was born at 12:57 p.m. with a birth weight of 159.8 grams. And the second cub who weighed 119.5 grams was born at 3:10 p.m. The twins are the world’s first captive giant panda twins born in 2020.

So far, the mother panda and cubs are all in good condition, according to the research base, which disclosed that the cubs have been able to drink their mother’s milk and cry since they were born.

“The birthday of the twins represents the earliest birth time of a year for giant pandas in the records of the giant panda research base, which was a happy surprise for all of us here,” said Wu Kongju, a specialist of the research base.

“Giant pandas rarely have estrus in winter and give birth in spring. This is the fifth time Fuwa gave birth to cubs,” Wu said.

Fuwa, who is about to turn 17, has given birth to eight giant panda cubs five times, according to Wu, who disclosed that Fuwa has shown strong maternal instinct this time.

In order to avoid any influences from the current epidemic on the lives of giant pandas, the giant panda research base has stockpiled a large amount of bamboo and asked experts to make emergency plans pertaining to the supply of bamboos for giant pandas.
