98-year-old COVID-19 patient discharged from hospital with her daughter and granddaughter

Three patients, a 98-year-old grandmother, a 79-year-old daughter and a 47-year-old granddaughter, infected with pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus were all discharged from the Wuhan No. 1 Hospital in central China on the morning of March 3.

When the three patients were discharged from the hospital, they were greeted by street and community workers and sent on their way to a quarantine point for 14 days.

According to Ms. Pan, the granddaughter, the three patients had suspected symptoms one after another around Feb. 9: her grandmother had a fever and her cough was very obvious; her mother's symptoms were slightly less severe, but she had huge psychological pressure.

Ms. Pan immediately reported to the community committee. On Feb. 12, the three of them were all diagnosed with pneumonia caused by the novel coronavirus, after nucleic acid tests and admitted to the No. 1 Hospital on Feb. 13.

On the same day of admission, the second group of medical staff from the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University arrived in the Wuhan No. 1 Hospital to provide medical assistance.

Two days later, Li Yuanshi, chief physician of the department of cardiology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University, led the team to take over care for the three patients.

"When I first came here, the grandmother patient could not speak, and the situation was very critical," said Li Yuanshi, adding that "The nurse brushed her hair every day, cheered her on, and gave her appropriate treatment. Gradually she got better. The old lady smiled at us every day during the rounds..."

"I'm very, very delighted that my mother and grandmother could recover from the disease. I want to thank the medical staff of the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University for their meticulous treatment, and the street as well as community workers for their active efforts," said Ms. Pan.

"I was very worried at first. But when we moved in and saw all the paramedics, I become assured.” Ms. Pan pointed out that the medical team took care of every possible thing and gave them the confidence to overcome the disease.
