Thangka, a style of Tibetan scroll painting depicting Buddhist deities, which is painted onto cotton or silk using mineral and organic pigments, is now rejuvenating the local economy in Xiahe county, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China’s Gansu province.

Selling Thangka paintings has become a source of income for many local families, and the skill is fast becoming favored by local teenagers.

There are now 15 registered Thangka companies and 30 painting studios in the county.
