BEIJING, Dec. 20 (Xinhua) -- Wang Yifu has been elected president of the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots (ACFTC), the group announced Thursday.

The federation said the five-day Taiwan compatriots' congress, which concluded on Thursday in Beijing, resulted in the election of a new 96-member council for the ACFTC.

Wang was elected president of the federation, while 14 others -- Wang Song, Ye Huili, Jiang Erxiong, Ji Bin, Su Hui, Yang Yizhou, Wu Guozhen, Wu Kaiqi, Wu Qiongkai, Zhang Zexi, Chen Jie, Lin Mingyue, Liang Guoyang and Yan Ke -- were elected vice chairpersons.

Following deliberations, the congress also adopted a work report on the eighth council of the ACFTC as well as an amendment to the federation's constitution.

In his address given at Thursday's closing ceremony, Wang said the federation's new leadership will strive to break new ground in rallying Taiwanese compatriots for the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties and achieving China's reunification.

A native of Tainan, Taiwan, Wang was born in 1950 and is currently vice chairman of the Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League, one of eight non-communist political parties on the Chinese mainland.

He had previously served as deputy governor of Fujian Province for ten years.

Founded in 1981, the ACFTC consists mainly of native Taiwanese residing on the mainland. It maintains contact with Taiwanese across the Taiwan Strait and in foreign countries.
