SYDNEY, February 7th. -- Sydney set a new Guinness World Record for the most people eating dumplings in one location at the same time. The attempt succeeded on February 5th at Tumbalong Park in Darling Harbour in Sydney.
The event was part of Sydney’s Lunar Festival celebration. The City of Sydney teamed up with WSFM’s Jonesy & Amanda and My Kitchen Rules to attempt the Guinness World Records title of The Largest Yum Cha Meal.
This record-breaking feast incorporated 1,000 people eating dumplings together. More than 4,000 dumplings were prepared for the challenge and official Guinness World Record adjudicators were on site to monitor the 100 tables of 10 participants across the park. To break the record, all participants were served four dumplings each and had to eat at least two to secure the new title. Ultimately, 765 people sat together eating dumplings, shattering the old mark of 750 people eating yum cha at the same time set in Melbourne in 2013.
On the same day, Clover Moore, mayor of City of Sydney and Councillor Robert Kok headed to Chinatown and handed out 1300 lucky red packet, to pass on prosperity and good luck for the year ahead.
