Lantern maze lights up ancient town in NW China

(People's Daily Online)    16:12, February 27, 2018

Display of a traditional nine-curve lantern maze made up of 365 lanterns began in an ancient town in northwest China’s Gansu province on Feb. 25, Chinanews.com reported Monday.

The lantern maze, which is now a historical and cultural heritage in Gansu province, was derived from a military formation in a myth that can be dated back to ancient Yin and Shang Dynasties, more than 3,000 years ago. Until the 13th century, people living in the old town kept the tradition of walking around in the lantern maze and praying for good luck in the middle of the first lunar month.
