For those who dream about one day spreading their wings and becoming a beautiful swan, there is now a place where they can make those dreams come true.

The 50th anniversary exhibition of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, which opened on Aug. 12 and will run to Oct. 29, displays nearly 300 illustrations by 25 award-winners at the National Library.

Lu Jun, who is in charge of the exhibition, revealed this is the first time for the illustrators to pull together their art pieces for a single exhibition, as all had their works on display at different venues.

“This is the top illustration exhibition in the world. If you miss out on this, you are missing out on half a century,” Lu was quoted as saying. Lu added that many of the illustrator-winners were in their 50s and 60s. The youngest one was born in the 1960s, while nine have passed away.

It is expected that some 200,000 visits will be made to the exhibition. Some 50,000 tickets have been presold, the organizers revealed online before the opening.

According to one of the organizers, CITIC Press Group, the exhibition was authorized by the International Board on Books for Young People, which is also a founder of the Hans Christian Andersen Award, in an attempt to bring more summer activities for children, as well as to help boost children’s book sales.
