China's oldest Islamic mosque sits in Quanzhou, eastern China's Fujian province. Qingjing Mosque, or Masjid al-Ashab, was built during the Northern Song Dynasty, following its design in Damascus, Syria. The structure carries great significance, as it records the way Quanzhou was connected to the world by sea. In 1961, Qingjing Mosque was listed among China's first batch of national-level cultural heritage sites. The site will also be a candidate for World Cultural Heritage status in 2018.
