On March 14, scientists conducted the third drilling mission of an expedition to the South China Sea. They boarded the U.S. drilling ship JOIDES Resolution and examined the ship closely. The drilling ship is 143 meters long and 21 meters wide. It has a maximum tonnage of 186,00 tons and a maximum operating depth of 8,000 meters. It is capable of sailing for 75 days straight and drilling to a depth of up to 2,000 meters below the seabed.
