Seventeen people were detained by police in Mianyang, Sichuan province, for allegedly spreading rumors about the end of the world, the Chengdu Commercial Daily reported on Monday.
Police sources said that the people were found to have spread the rumors in public places and residential communities in downtown areas and in rural places.
Police reminded residents not to believe and spread rumors, and to report anyone spreading rumors to authorities.
