2. Consequences of the United States' strategy of returning to Asia to the Southeast Asian countries and their views on the strategy
Larry Strange: The United States' returning to Asia will cause tension among ASEAN countries. The ASEAN countries hope to maintain a strong relationship with both China and the United States, but they will, to a great extent, rely more on China in the future economic development. Meanwhile, some ASEAN countries hope that the United States can become the counterweight of China in Asia-Pacific region, which is a challenge to ASEAN countries. The United States should also be more careful and cautious after returning to Asia and shoulder its due responsibilities. The United States should not give special support to some countries, which is especially important to its strong and historical allies.
Simon SC Tay,Chairman, Singapore Institute of International affair:The key for the United States to return to Asia, the fastest growing region in the global economy, is to deal with its relations with China. There are problems between Asian organizations and countries, which gives a chance to the "rebalance" strategy of the United States. If Asia is powerful and Asian countries maintain a good relationship with each other, the United States is impossible to intervene in the region and the relations of all parties would not be tense. Therefore, Asian countries should deal with the internal relations well on the occasion of the United States' returning to Asia and make full use of such platforms as the ASEAN and "ASEAN + 3 (including China, Japan and South Korea)" to solve the related problems.
