Chinese American communities making a difference to save lives

By Wei Deng (People's Daily Online)    17:03, April 16, 2020

Redwood City, California, April 14 (People's Daily Online) – Under the COVID-19 pandemic, the supply of masks and personal protection equipment needed for hospitals and emergency responders is urgently needed, as supplies are scarce. San Mateo County hospitals and emergency responders are in constant need of new supplies, facing many challenges in identifying consistent providers.

In response to this critical need, hundreds of Chinese Americans mobilized and have sourced supplies of personal protective equipment (PPE). Chinese American residents in San Mateo County community are in partnership with organizations such as vetted suppliers, purchasing and delivering more than $100,000 worth of masks and PPE to San Mateo County hospitals.

Continuing in the spirit of worldwide cooperation in fighting COVID-19, large Chinese American companies such as Yuntingic Resources Inc., the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (USA), and Consulate General of People’s Republic of China in San Francisco, Consul General Donghua Wang, coordinated with Supervisor Dave Pine (District 1) to donate 4,600 top-quality masks and 175 protective coveralls today, April 14, 2020, to San Mateo County.

Tong Li, Yuntingic Resources, said, “San Mateo County is our community, we want to help!”

Florence Fang, a local philanthropist, donated $10,000 to San Mateo Strong (www.smcstrong.org) and recorded a message to encourage Chinese Americans to dig deeper to help alleviate the plight of small businesses and out-of-work individuals.

“The San Mateo County Chinese American Community, Chinese American companies, and the Chinese Consulate-General in San Francisco, have all stepped up to help our county fight COVID-19, with both generous donations of funds and badly needed personal protective equipment” said San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine.

“We all have to come together as one community to prevent the spread of the virus and to lend a hand to our residents in need during these trying times.”

Martin Yan, famous chef host from San Mateo County, and JoJo Garden TV host, JoJo Zou organized the fundraising, “Love heals, we want to help. Yesterday, we dropped off masks door to door to our neighbors in the community. When we work together, illness becomes wellness”.
