PARIS, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese women's football legend Sun Wen said that defense was to be attributed to China's win over South Africa here on Thursday, and the team needs to improve efficiency in its counter-attack and finish if it wants to go deep in the competition.
China triumphed 1-0 at the Parc des Princes in Paris, sitting third behind Spain due to inferior goal differential on three points.
"Three crucial points. The team has withstood pressure, and done well in defense in the match, without conceding too many chances to opponents. I think that is the foundation of our victory," Sun told Xinhua.
China will face Spain in Group B final round on Monday.
"Now we stay in contention for a spot in the knockout stage with three points ahead of another crucial clash with Spain," said Sun.
"We need to rely on our defense. The team has done a great job in keeping its defensive system, which is our progress. Better counter-attack and finish will be of huge help to the team if it wants to go further in the tournament," she added.
For Sun, the Chinese team has displayed progress in defense, which is quite significant for a team in major tournaments.
"Stay focused and keep fighting as a group," the Chinese legend pointed out.
