KATHMANDU, May 27 (Xinhua) -- Nepali security agencies were on high alert on Monday during a general strike called upon by an underground armed outfit suspected of making two bomb explosions in capital city Kathmandu that killed four people and leaving eight others injured on Sunday.

Bishwaraj Pokharel, the spokesperson of the Nepal Police, told Xinhua that security has been stepped up across the country to avoid any untoward incidents during the general strike called by the armed outfit.

"We are on high alert following Sunday's two major explosions," Pokharel said, adding that over 5,000 police personnel have been deployed in maintaining security in Kathmandu.

The one-day general strike affected normal lives of people across the country. Main markets, academic institutions, corporate offices and private organizations remained closed while public transportation was badly affected due to the general strike, media reports said here.

The armed group had called for the strike to exert pressure on the government to release its arrested cadres, according to reports.

During the strike, the police have defused improvised explosive devices in some parts of the country which were planted to terrorize people. The cadres of Chand-led group torched three vehicles in Ramechhap, Makawanpur and Surkhet districts.

The police spokesperson said that they were investigating into Sunday's blasts. The two explosions took place at around 4:30 p.m. local time on Sunday.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that all the four killed and eight injured on Sunday's blasts were the cadres of the outlawed Chand-led group. We have been investigating into the blasts," Pokharel said.

The first explosion took place at a private house in Ghattekulo area, barely one kilometer away from the prime minister's office while the second explosion took place inside a hair salon at Sukedhara area.

"We believe that the cadres of the Chand-led group were killed and injured when they were collecting improvised explosive devices to detonate during the general strike called for Monday (today)," another senior police official told Xinhua.

Meanwhile, Nepali Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa on Monday told parliamentarians that the government was committed to bring the Chand-led armed group to the mainstream peaceful politics.

Addressing a session of the country's House of Representatives in Kathmandu, the home minister vowed to take action against the perpetrators involved in the recent bomb explosions in the capital.

"The government is committed to maintain robust security across the country. All those involved in the bomb explosions will soon be arrested," he said.

The Chand-led group, which is one of the breakaway factions of the former rebel Maoist, has been known for violence in Nepal in recent years.

The group was banned by the Nepali government in March this year after it was found involved in criminal activities and explosions in different parts of the country.
