BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhua) -- China and Greece co-produced bilingual play Agamemnon, a masterpiece of ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus, premiered Wednesday evening at the National Theatre of China.

The play, co-produced by the national theatres of China and Greece, features both Chinese and Greek actors and actresses, languages, and cultural and musical elements.

The play presents the Greek mythology in which Agamemnon, king of Argos, united the Greek armed forces for a crusade against Troy and ended up being killed by his wife upon return to Greece for sacrificing his own daughter for the war.

Stathis Livathinos, the artistic director of the National Theatre of Greece and the Agamemnon play director, said he tried to interpret the ancient Greek work from the perspective of modern languages and aesthetics.

The play was part of the cooperation and exchange between the two country's national theatres. Last year, another bilingual co-production by the two sides, "The Orphan of Zhao," a drama based on a traditional Chinese tragedy, was staged in Athens.
