A man from Germany now working in Changsha in central China’s Hunan province has earned a high reputation because of the charitable deeds he is doing in this oriental country.
The man Uwe Brutzer used to work for a pharmaceutical factory based in Stuttgart, Germany. Now he runs a bakery in Changsha that employs eight speaking and hearing impaired personnel.
18 years ago, after learning that many hearing impaired children in Hunan who could have been able to speak were losing their chances to have a voice due to inadequate rehabilitation training, Brutzer and his wife Dorothee Brutzer immediately decided to go to China and work for a local rehabilitation center for the disabled under the administration of the Hunan Disabled Persons' Federation.
During the past years, the couple has left their footprints in every inch of Hunan province, helping over 500 hearing impaired children. However, Brutzer found that it would still be uneasy for the hearing impaired group to find jobs even though they are able to communicate and work.
Therefore, he started the bakery in 2011, which was a move of him to make the world believe that speaking and hearing impaired people are able to be independent.

The bakery has trained a total of 16 professional bakers during the past 8 years. Apprentice Ma Shaohua told China News Service that free classes are offered to learn baking at Brutzer’s bakery, and Brutzer would even pay him several hundred yuan every month. Ma “said” confidently that after one or two years, he would become a real baker and be qualified at any bakery.
According to Zhang Ming, who has been working for five years at the bakery, the bakery is entirely different from the working environment she was in. Now she’s very respected and earns over 3,000 yuan every month in a decent and relaxed manner. She noted that she would keep working for this bakery.

The bakery always suffered losses, running on the savings of the Brutzers. However, it has turned losses into profits in the past two years and become a celebrated bakery on the internet, drawing many visitors and customers.
“What we do is trivial, and we hope to help as many people as we can,” Brutzer said. He is always willing to help those speaking and hearing impaired people who want to be independent.
