In his speech, Mr Guo Weimin said that China and Brunei are good partners and good friends. In recent years, as the Belt and Road Initiative makes advances, the two countries have conducted increasingly frequent mutual visits and exchanges and entered into pragmatic cooperation in various fields. President Xi Jinping’s upcoming state visit to Brunei will further promote the friendly relations between the two countries. It is expected that this exhibition will be an opportunity for the Bruneian people to get a glimpse of the beautiful and idyllic landscape of China and feel for themselves the friendship and sincerity of the Chinese people as well as the rapid and vigorous development of China, so as to help the two peoples better understand each other. In the new era, China stands ready to work with Brunei to write splendid chapters of silk road cultures featuring peaceful development and common prosperity. The launch of the Brunei special issue of China Report ASEAN will serve as a new bridge that further promotes the exchanges and cooperation and strengthens the people-to-people connectivity between the two countries.

Ambassador Yang Jian said the ancient silk road was not just a trade route for goods, but also a bridge that facilitated the people-to-people exchanges and communication of countries along the road. More importantly, the silk road promoted the cultural exchanges and mutual understanding of different countries in the world. Today we are ready to join hands with our partners in building the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road towards common prosperity.

Distinguished guests from China and Brunei jointly cut the ribbon for the exhibition and unveiled the Brunei special issue of China Report ASEAN.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reform and opening-up, the 15th anniversary of China-ASEAN strategic partnership and the 5th anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. The long maritime silk road not only made China and Brunei brilliant in ancient times, but also connected the two countries by establishing a profound friendship between them. The continuation and combination of the age-old friendship of the two maritime silk road countries and the new silk road spirit inject new impetus into their friendship. The four sections of the exhibition—“Bonds of Friendship”, “Along the Maritime Silk Road”, “People-to-People Connectivity” and “Uniqueness and Diversity”—present nearly 100 pictures taken by photographers from both countries to showcase the beauty of mountains, rivers and cultures of the two countries, and illustrate moving stories about the traditional friendship and friendly exchanges between the two peoples.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is the demonstration and interactive experience of Chinese intangible cultural heritage such as Chinese embroidery and porcelain. A 3-metre long scroll of hand embroidery, which features national flowers of the ten ASEAN member countries, artistically interprets the deep friendship of ASEAN countries. “Mosque on the Water”, a Chinese hand embroidery art work themed with Bruneian culture, attracts numerous visitors. The ancient pottery and porcelain wares on display have been given a modern touch thanks to technological innovations and whole new aesthetic concepts. “Zhaoming Fu Shou Jar”, for example, is based on ancient skills used in making Jun ware but draws upon new technologies like outlining with gold and re-sintering. Embroidery and porcelain artists also demonstrate their skills and craftmanship at the exhibition. Visitors were captivated by profound Chinese art and sophisticated handicrafts.

“Look at that! This painting is three-dimensional without the use of 3D glasses.” The glasses-free 3D captured the attention of visitors. This exhibition makes use of glasses-free 3D and AR to give visitors better interactive experience, and AR has been integrated into intangible cultural and creative products on display. The exhibition seeks to demonstrate how China carries forward its long, splendid traditional culture with innovations and creativity, and give visitors a multi-dimensional, panoramic view of Chinese and Bruneian cultures.
