2018 Liupanshui Belt and Road & ASEAN Media Tour begins

Journalists, students and experts attend the initiative ceremony of the 2018 Liupanshui Belt and Road & ASEAN Media Tour.

The 2018 Liupanshui Belt and Road & ASEAN Media Tour kicked off today, July 25, with an opening ceremony in Liupanshui city, Guizhou province.

The tour will last for almost a week and see international and ASEAN reporters, students and experts explore the beauty and industry of Guizhou province.

Addressing the audience, Wang Zhiqiu, director of the editorial department of People's Daily Guizhou Branch, said, “Today, Liupanshui invites media friends from all over the world to come and feel the charm of the “Cool City”. It has a high standing position, views for miles and strong pertinence.”

Liupanshui is well known in China for its enjoyable summers and fresh, clean air. Tourism in the area is set to increase, and the city’s location is perfect to trade its rich resources through Belt and Road links.

The connection between China and ASEAN countries is becoming ever stronger, as this year marks 40 years since China’s reform and opening up and the continuous development of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Vithit Powattanasuk, Director of Information and Public Relations at the ASEAN-China Centre said during his address, “In 2017, two-way trade topped $514.8 billion and the accumulated two-way direct investment approached $200 billion. China has been ASEAN’s largest trading partner for nine consecutive years while ASEAN has been China’s third largest trading partner for seven years in a row.”

He noted that there were nearly 50 million mutual visits between the two sides last year, and the number of exchange students has now exceeded 200,000, adding that ASEAN-China relations have become the most dynamic and profound that ASEAN has with its dialogue partners.

Liupanshui’s trade is not only set to reach ASEAN countries. Wang explained that the red-heart kiwifruit, a famous fruit of Liupanshui, has already successfully entered the markets of Southeast Asia and North America. The fruit wine series has also passed FDA certification and will shortly be allowed to enter the U.S. market.

It’s hoped that this media tour will allow journalists and guests to experience the cool summer of Liupanshui, the beautiful scenery and extensive industry in the area, allowing more people to learn of and visit the city.
