Trump’s proposal to create a space force met with laughs on social media

By Curtis Stone (People's Daily Online)    14:55, June 19, 2018

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he is ordering the creation of a sixth branch of the US military: Space Force.

According to Space Policy Directive-3, the United States wants to ensure unfettered access to the space domain.

“Given the significance of space activities, the United States considers the continued unfettered access to and freedom to operate in space of vital interest to advance the security, economic prosperity, and scientific knowledge of the Nation,” the directive read.

But US President Donald Trump made it clear in his remarks that the goal of the space force is to make sure that the United States dominates the space domain.

“When it comes to defending America, it is not enough to merely have an American presence in space,” Trump said on Monday. “We must have American dominance in space.”

Trump also said that the United States cannot let either China or Russia lead in space. “We don’t want China and Russia and other countries leading us,” Trump added. “We’re going to be the leader by far.”

Naturally, the proposal to create a space force was met with laughs on social media. Twitter users had a field day with the news, with some comparing the proposal to sci-fi favorites such as Star Wars.

“Cobra Commander,” the archenemy of G.I. Joe in the animated television series of the same name from the mid-1980s about a fearless American hero and an evil organization bent on world domination, announced on Twitter that the Cobra’s are ready for the new space force.

“The Space Force will make the Galaxy Great Again!” One user teased, referring to Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.

But American domination in space is far from guaranteed, at least according to one user who could only think about the movie Spaceballs, a 1987 comedy film created in the style of the original Star Wars trilogy. If this is the future of the space force, the American dream of domination is doomed.

Although there are many hurdles to overcome before the new space force becomes reality, at least one major issue has already been solved. One Twitter user has posted an exclusive first look at the new space force uniforms.

All jokes aside, there are a lot of issues with the proposal to create a space force. For example, US lawmakers will need to approve the new force and the US government will need to figure out how to pay for it. A lot of structural and financial barriers must be overcome in order to create a sixth branch of the US military; and for now, at least, it is unlikely that the proposal will ever become reality. However, it does shed light on US intentions: dominate all domains.

The proposal to create the world’s first space force is troubling for many reasons. Establishing a space force will increase competition between major countries, upset the military balance, and weaken the security of other countries. In short, the US move to militarize space is not conducive to lasting peace and security.

The proposal shows that the United States is hell-bent on trying to dominate all domains, despite the fact that the United States is one of 105 parties to sign an international treaty banning the militarization of space.

Humor can be found in Trump’s proposal to create a space force. But the goal to have “American dominance in space” is a threat to world peace. As a powerful country with a tremendous amount of resources, the current US administration should do more to enhance cooperation in all domains rather than increase the likelihood of a conflict between the great powers.
