China's reform and opening-up policy, launched in 1978, has since then transformed the nation. 40 years after the policy was initiated, we talked to Thomas B. Gold, professor of UC Berkeley, who first went to China in 1975, spent a year living in Shanghai in 1979 and revisits the nation from time to time.
