NU SKIN vice president elaborates on strategy, development in China (3)

(People's Daily Online)    13:58, December 19, 2017

Reporter: What do you think of the business environment in China? As the legal counsel of NU SKIN, how do you view Chinese regulations for foreign companies?

Mr. Dorny: Laws and regulations play a critical role in shaping the business environment and incentives for companies interested in contributing to the economy. Every country’s regulatory framework for direct selling companies is different, and China’s is no exception. Before entering the Chinese market, NU SKIN spent about 5 to 6 years researching Chinese laws and regulations, laying a solid foundation for us. The direct selling industry here has developed a lot during the 12 years since China launched direct-selling laws and opened up the market in 2005. During that time, we have seen significant improvements in government regulation and the overall market for our industry. We believe that China will become the largest direct-selling market in the future. Our active commitment to the Chinese market will be good for China, and also good for our company’s global development. We expect to maintain close communications with the Chinese government to ensure that our operations are in full compliance with Chinese laws and regulations.

About two years ago, during conferences commemorating China’s direct selling laws coming into effect, there were a number of discussions amongst Chinese regulators, industry associations, and industry players about revising China’s direct-selling laws. We are supportive of making revisions to these laws and would like to contribute in any way possible—perhaps by sharing international best practices—during the revision process.

Reporter: US President Donald Trump visited China last month. What do you think of the results achieved in the economic and trade fields between China and the United States? Which result you have observed most?

Mr. Dorny: During US President Donald Trump's state visit to China, Chinese and US companies signed 34 deals worth $253.5 billion. If realized, the total value would be nearly half of 2016 China-US total trade volume. As an American company, NU SKIN values the healthy development of China-US trade relations. China, as the second largest economy, has played a positive role in promoting the recovery and development of the world economy. NU SKIN has been a beneficiary of China's economic growth, with business now in nearly 50 regions (China has become NU SKIN’s largest market, accounting for nearly 30% of our 2016 revenue).

We know that there are challenges in the US-China relationship, but we are committed to doing our small part to help foster the kinds of connections between our two countries that will lay the foundation for both sides to seek common ground, enhance cooperation, and work together for development. There is great potential here, if China and the US are able to work together to support the global economy and pursue common prosperity for our shared future.
