2019 International Horticultural Expo’s China Pavilion design plan released

Cui Kai introduces the design

The Beijing Park design plan for the International Horticultural Expo 2019 was released on Dec. 7 during a press conference addressing the expo’s first ambassador and China pavilion design plan by Cui Kai, the chief architect of China Academy of Engineering and China Architectural Design and Research Institute.

“China pavilion is designed to be a semi-circular dome shaped building surrounded by mountains and rivers,” said Cui. The major exhibition halls are covered under terraces cropped with colorful grain products to reflect pastoral scenery and present the simple way of living in ancient times. Technologies such as watering systems and lighting are integrated into gardening, so human beings can coexist with nature in harmony.

Drawing on the wisdom of ancient cave dwellers, Beijing Park is designed to be a new model of green ecological conservation. Moisture holding capacity and heat insulation of earth-sheltered designs are installed to save energy. With a rainfall collection system on the roof and rainwater storage underground, collected and processed rainwater can be used for irrigation, which completes ecological microcirculation. Complementing the overall shape of pavilion buildings, 1,024 solar panels on the steel roof increases light energy absorption.

“The China pavilion connects culture and nature, and combines scenery and technology through traditional oriental concepts of space and time to gently tell gardening stories of China and to interpret the spirit of our time,” Cui explained.

The International Horticultural Expo in Beijing will open on April 29, 2019, in Yanqing District, some 10 kilometers from the Great Wall. Therefore, it is called “The Expo at the Foot of Great Wall.” As of November, nearly 70 countries, regions, and international organizations have registered to attend the expo.
