China completes world’s longest undersea tunnel

By Shan Xin (People's Daily Online)    13:29, July 07, 2017

The undersea tunnel of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge was completed on Friday, putting a successful end to the entire infrastructure project of the world’s longest cross-sea bridge.

The undersea tunnel, at 6.7 km, is the world’s longest. The biggest challenge in its construction was splicing together the 30 huge tubes while 40 meters underwater. Two artificial islands were built to help transport materials for the construction of the bridge and tunnel, which allowed large tankers to continue passing through.

The bridge spans 55 kilometers and links Guangdong’s Zhuhai with the special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao. Connecting the three cities will decrease transportation time in the area from four hours to half an hour. It will enhance people-to-people cooperation, logistics, trade, and information flow in southern China, and will play an important role in the Road and Belt Initiative.

The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge will be put into operation by the end of 2017. Building construction on the oyster-shaped artificial islands and other work is still being done.
