"Let us support the efforts of the 9 US presidents and 5 Chinese leaders that have shaped a positive US-China relationship to where it stands today," former Hong Kong Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa spoke at an event in New York on June 14, 2017, calling both sides to work closely together on many of the challenges and to understand each other a great deal more.
“The general level of understanding has improved in recent years, but it is not enough," Tung said, before he urged people from the two countries to trust each other’s goodwill and intentions more. "Too much is at stake for the Chinese and American people, and for that matter, for the world at large, a constructive relationship will always be possible," said Tung.
Tung was giving the opening remarks at the High Level Dialogue on US-China Economic Relations that is co-organized by CCIEE and Asia Society in New York.
