A total of 40 artillery shells were discovered beside a residential community on May 29 in Jinan, Shandong province during a routine sewer line excavation. The excavator contacted local police after finding six shells that were 20 to 30 centimeters in length. Police then arranged for a team of specialists to clear the site.
According to the chief of the local police bureau, the shells were found in a 30-meter ditch approximately 1 meter below ground. Local residents were shocked by the news that they had been living on top of the shells for several decades. However, the origin of the shells remains unknown.
For now, the shells have been transferred to an air-raid shelter, and police will further examine the site to rule out any safety concerns.
