Carpenter pulled out of poverty with help of targeted poverty alleviation

By Li Yan (People's Daily Online)    18:05, May 24, 2017

Targeted poverty alleviation efforts have helped many farmers in Zibo, Shandong province to pull themselves out of poverty. Zhao Shuhuan is one such farmer. The 54-year-old has had a physical disability in his leg since childhood. A skillful carpenter, Zhao nevertheless descended into poverty as he grew older and the demand for carpentry shrank.

Two years ago, the local poverty alleviation department helped Zhao build a workshop and purchase cutting and polishing machines. The department also assisted him in setting up a booth at a nearby furniture market.

In one year, sales at Zhao's carpentry workshop have surpassed 100,000 RMB ($14,513). The workshop has provided jobs to three of Zhao's fellow villagers. Currently, Zhao is making plans to promote his products online.
