Celtuce sales slump in NW China

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    13:43, April 24, 2017

The sale of celtuce in Weinan, Shaanxi province has recently experienced a sharp decline, with prices dropping to 0.4 RMB ($0.07) per kilogram this year, down from as high as 3.6 RMB in 2016. Great losses are inevitable for farmers, given a growing cost of 1,500 to 2,000 RMB per mu (666.67 square meters). More than 5,000 mu of celtuce is currently left unsold.

One farmer, 66-year-old Dong Dongzhi, said he possesses 5 mu of celtuce that he hasn't been able to sell.

"Somebody in my village earned just 2,000 RMB for 1.8 mu of celtuce," said Dong, adding that the price per mu is now below 1,000.
