Foreign passengers summoned for urgent talk with Shanghai Metro after subway eating incident

By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    15:51, April 13, 2017

Police officers and Shanghai Metro officials talk with the foreign passengers.

On April 12, the Shanghai Metro and local police organized a formal conversation with the foreign passengers who were called out publicly for eating and drinking on the subway. After realizing the negative impact of their behavior, the foreign passengers submitted a letter of apology.

A photo showing several foreigners eating and drinking in a carriage of the Shanghai subway aroused huge public attention on Chinese social media on April 7. The Shanghai Metro responded to the incident, acknowledging that the passengers' behavior had violated subway rules and appealing to the public to obey the rules for the sake of all passengers.

According to the rules for rail transit passengers issued by the Shanghai Metro, eating, drinking and making loud noises in carriages is prohibited. However, unlike rail transit regulations, the rules for the subway are not legally binding.
