For the first time, a Chinese Argentine has been awarded honorary citizenship in Buenos Aires.

The overseas Chinese woman, Tang Qinghui, received the honor on March 28 (local time) in the capital city of Argentina.

It was bestowed on her in recognition of her contribution to the cultural exchange between China and Argentina, especially in the realm of soccer.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Tang said the honor was also a recognition of overseas Chinese in Argentina. She vowed to further promote sports exchange and deepen friendly ties between the two countries, local Chinese media reported.

Tang emmigrated to Argentina in the 1990s.

Since 2001, she has worked to bring advanced soccer training methods and culture back to China.

Over the past decades, Tang has successfully organized a series of activities for junior soccer players to train in Argentina, even becoming the authorized guardian for Chinese players under the age of 18.

She has invited a total of 56 senior Argentine soccer coaches to teach in China.

In 2010, Tang also won exclusive rights to the research, development and promotion of Diego Maradona as a soccer brand.

Maradona, a soccer legend in his home country, personally thanked Tang via Instagram and Facebook posts earlier this month for helping to expand his brand into China.

"I will be eternally grateful," wrote Maradona.

Maradona is reportedly coming to China to coach junior soccer players, but it is not yet known which cities he will visit.
