A 17-year-old girl from Wuxi, Jiangsu province ran a marathon on March 19 while wearing a gray wig and a disposable diaper. Her stunt was a bid to raise public awareness of senile urinary incontinence.
The girl, nicknamed Xiaotao, said that urinary incontinence is an awkward case for many patients. She herself didn't know about it until her grandmother was diagnosed with the disease last year.
"I just want the elderly to know that young people are willing to help them, and diapers are a solution to the problem," Xiaotao noted.
According to a 2014 report, about 18.9 percent of males above the age of 60 were suffering from urinary incontinence by the end of 2015, and the figure for females was 37.7 percent. In addition, the likelihood of struggling with urinary incontinence grows with age.
However, many patients suffering from the disease feel embarrassed by their symptoms, and are unwilling to discuss their situation with others. It has even resulted in social ostracism for some elderly people.
The marketing director of Hangzhou Coco Healthcare Products Co., Ltd. said that the company is advocating for more public attention to be paid to senile urinary incontinence, especially by young people.
Everyone will get old, Xiaotao said, adding that she could also be a beneficiary of the movement in her twilight years if her actions are able to raise more public awareness.
