By Sun Wenyu (People's Daily Online)    17:04, February 14, 2017

Average spending for Valentine's Day on a per capita basis in the Chinese mainland is expected to hit $310, ranking first among Asian countries and regions, according to a report published by Mastercard. Hong Kong took second place, with an expected average personal spending of $282.

Nowadays, Valentine's Day is largely an opportunity for commercial promotion. However, consumption on this day is unusual in that it is mainly carried out by male consumers. A recent report suggested that men are expected to spend 25 percent more than women on Valentine's Day expenses. In addition, the two genders tend to purchase different gifts for their partners. Men are more likely to buy flowers, while women often buy clothing or leather goods.
