The dogs had been brutally ripping each other to pieces for hours as the crowd watched on, but nobody was going to rescue them until the fight was over. A lot of money was involved.
This is the spectacle of dog fighting in China. In the most recent incident, two suspects were detained by police for their roles in organizing a gambling ring for dog fights on October 27 in Luxi county, Yunnan Province, at an unlicensed dog-breeding operation.
The county's public security bureau is considering extending the detention period for these suspects so they can launch a thorough investigation into the clientele of the gambling operation, which included over 20 people from regions including Guangdong, Guangxi and Tianjin, Deng Duo, an officer from the county bureau's press office, told the Global Times.
"Apart from gambling at a venue named the Longteng Dog Industry Club, the suspects, including the club's owner, Jiao Jingsong, and another major organizer and participant, Liu Ruchuang, opened the gambling house and profited from the bloody fights," Deng said.
