In China, dog fighting is a long-standing tradition among some minority ethnic groups such as the Uyghur and Hui. People in Henan tend to focus on it purely for entertainment.
"However, it's always difficult for the police to separate dog fighting from gambling," said Liu Yunhui, head of the county's bureau.
"If gambling is involved, we will bust it uncompromisingly," Liu said.
The life of a fighting dog
The American Pit Bull Terrier, first introduced from Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland in the 1990s, became popular in Guangdong Province and the neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region before spreading to the whole country, reported the China News Weekly on November 1.
The breed is strong and has a lot of endurance, making it capable of fighting for up to two hours, and when biting, its jaw can exert 80 kilograms of pressure per square centimeter. The magazine also reported that due to the lower number of nerve endings in its skin combined with its flexibility, the dog is widely favored in competitions.
