Moped owners reminded to obey laws

Yangpu district police are reminding foreign students that they aren't supposed to drive their mopeds off campus without obtaining a license and registering the vehicle with authorities, local media reported Tuesday.

District police visited the foreign student dormitory at Fudan University Tuesday to lecture students about local traffic laws, according to a report in the Shanghai Evening Post.

Police renewed their campaign after three foreign students driving unregistered mopeds got into minor collisions in the district last month, according to a press officer surnamed Ding from the Yangpu district traffic police.

"Foreign students prefer the gasoline-powered scooters, but many of them take it for granted that they can ride them on the street as freely as they can in their own countries," Ding told the Global Times.

Before moped owners are allowed to drive on the street, they need to take exams to obtain a license and register their mopeds with authorities, Ding said.
