UNITED NATIONS, May 30 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations in Afghanistan on Thursday condemned a deadly attack against an International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) compound in the east part of the country, a UN spokesman told reporters here.
"The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) strongly condemns the attack that took place on an office of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the city of Jalalabad on Wednesday," said Eduardo del Buey, deputy spokesperson for UN secretary-general, at the daily briefing.
"The Mission was informed that two ICRC staff members -- one national and one international -- were injured in the attack, while one national security guard was killed," del Buey said.
However, police has rescued six foreign aid workers of the ICRC shortly after the attack, according to reports.
There has been no claim of responsibility for the incident, which marks the first ever attack on the humanitarian organization in this war-hit nation.
UNAMA has extended its condolences to the family of the guard and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured.
Del Buey quoted UNAMA as saying that the ICRC "plays a critical and impartial humanitarian role in Afghanistan."
According to the deputy spokesperson, the mission stressed that "attacks on humanitarian and medical personnel are strictly prohibited under international humanitarian law."
"It emphasizes that all medical and humanitarian personnel in the country must be respected and protected at all times," said del Buey.
The attack came less than a week after the office of the International Organization for Migration in Kabul was attacked, injuring four aid workers and reportedly killing three civilians passing on the street at the time of the attack, for which the Taliban has claimed responsibility.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and other senior UN officials condemned the attack and urged that those responsible be brought to justice.
