KANO, Nigeria, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Unidentified gunmen riding on motorcycle on Tuesday evening killed five persons in Nigeria's northwestern state of Kano.
A security source told Xinhua that the gunmen stormed the Dakata area of Kano metropolis, shooting sporadically at residents scampering for safety.
The gunmen were said to have escaped after the killing, before operatives of the Joint Military Task Force arrived at the scene and cordoned off the entire place.
The source added that five persons playing local draft game were killed on the spot and two others sustained injury.
The injured persons were rushed to an undisclosed hospital in the city for treatment.
The attack came hours after the state government banned motorcycles from carrying passengers in the metropolis, following the attack on the convoy of prominent northern leader, the Emir of Kano Ado Bayero, with an improvised explosive device. At least four people were killed in the raid.
