DAMASCUS, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- Syria has been buffeted by the greatest social, political and military upheaval it has ever gone through, with few ups and so many downs. The crisis, started in March 2011, witnessed in 2012 dramas including the upsurge in violence, the failure of political initiatives and the fierce military showdown, while the final solution still seems remote.

Starting over 21 months ago with peaceful demonstrations demanding improved living conditions and expanded rights, the opposition's demands shortly upgraded to the overthrow of the regime, as the demonstrations turned into bloody violence that quickly spread across the country.
