The violence reached an unparalleled and unprecedented level in 2012 and clashes between the Syrian army and the opposition's Syrian Free Army have spread to strategic areas in the country, basically Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus.
The violence has resulted in a massive exodus from several hotspots in Syria to neighboring countries. International organizations put the number of displaced Syrians at around 3 million, warning that the refugees are in a pressing need of shelters and daily necessities.
Several regional and international political initiatives have been put forward to reach a suitable settlement. However, all those attempts have fallen flat and proven to be a fiasco.
In January 2012, the Arab League unanimously proposed an initiative to solve the crisis in Syria providing for embarking on a dialogue between the opposition and the government to form a national unity government, and that the president would turn over all his prerogatives to his deputy. The opposition welcomed the initiative, but the government turned it down.
