Typically, a car's cruise control, which allows a vehicle to maintain its speed without the driver pressing the accelerator, will disengage when the driver turns it off or hits the brakes. But that didn't work for Shen.
"Even when I pulled the handbrake, the car only slowed slightly," Shen told the TV station.
He called police when driving at the high speed and Zhejiang police sent two patrol cars to escort him. At 6:42 pm, he passed through a toll booth in Jinshan district. When he approached the Zhuanghu Highway, however, the road ahead became crowded with trucks. "I kept honking but the trucks didn't respond, so I summoned all my strength to pull the handbrake and closed my eyes," Shen said.
Shen bought the car in April for 200,000 yuan ($32,100).
Toyota said it has not identified the cause of the cruise control's malfunction, the local TV station reported. The crash remains under investigation.
