A new kind of parking option has recently become available in Beijing, designed with needs of non-motor vehicles in mind. Different from traditional parking spaces, which are located immediately beside sidewalks, the new parking spaces are between a bicycle lane and regular motor-vehicle lanes. As a result, bicycles and motor vehicles are separated by parked cars, improving traffic safety for vulnerable commuters. In addition, a space about the width of 1 meter has been reserved on the left side of the "parking lot" to prevent passing cyclists from colliding with open car doors.
