The name "Jiaohe" means the meeting of two rivers, as this ancient city situated in modern-day Turpan was built between two deep river valleys. The history of the ancient city of Jiaohe can be dated back to 2,300 years ago, when it used to be an important site along the ancient Silk Road. All the buildings in Jiaohe were made from packed earth and the arid climate in Turpan provided the perfect conditions to preserve and keep them in good shape over the centuries. Jiaohe is one of the largest, oldest, and best-preserved earthen cities still in existence. Thousands of years on, this ancient city is still shimmering with charm, attracting curious tourists to trace the footstep of their long lost ancestors.
