China's sci-fi blockbuster "The Wandering Earth" has become the second highest grossing film of all time in China's mainland, according to Maoyan, a professional box office tracker, reports Beijing News.

The sci-fi film, released on Feb. 5, raked in over 3.7 billion yuan (about 547 million U.S. dollars) in ticket sales as of Sunday afternoon, exceeding the action film "Operation Red Sea" that grossed 3.65 billion yuan.

It also broke Chinese film's five-year box office record in the North American market, according to Shanghai-based CMC Inc., who was responsible for the film's distribution in the region.

"Wolf Warrior 2" still remains China's top earner ever with 5.68 billion yuan in revenues, which was directed by and starring action star Wu Jing.

"The Wandering Earth," directed by Guo Fan and adapted from the work of Hugo Award Winner Liu Cixin, also stars Wu Jing. The film tells a story of an epic project to move the Earth and its 3.5 billion residents to a remote star system in the near future because the sun is dying and is about to swallow up the Earth.
