China’s Ministry of Agriculture on Thursday confirmed that no European pesticide-contaminated eggs have entered Chinese mainland.

“No European country has been approved to import eggs to China to date, so no European tainted eggs can be found in local markets,” said Jin Fazhong, deputy director of the Agricultural Product Quality and Safety Supervision Bureau under the Ministry of Agriculture, at a monthly news conference.

The toxic eggs scandal started on Aug. 1, with Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands recalling millions of eggs over toxicity fears. Hong Kong SAR and 16 European countries announced they have received some eggs with the pesticide Fipronil from Netherlands, the world's largest eggs exporter. According to the World Health Organization, Fipronil is classified as “moderately hazardous” and can cause nausea and dizziness if consumed in large quantities.

According to Jin, China has stringent regulations on pesticides and Fipronil is strictly prohibited in poultry breeding. Supervision of pesticides and veterinary drugs will be strengthened in China to ensure the quality of agricultural products and the public’s health.
