The Panamanian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that it has opened an embassy in Beijing after establishing diplomatic ties with China in June.

In a statement, the ministry said that the opening of the embassy had been done in accordance with principles governing diplomatic relations between the two countries.

It added that the embassy was already functioning, although an ambassador had yet to be installed.

Spokesperson Lu Kang said China's office of commercial development in Panama was transformed into an embassy on July 13.

China and Panama established formal diplomatic relations on June 13 after Panama severed ties with Taiwan.
