Saudi Arabia Offers Assistance to Afghans
Saudi Arabia's King Fahd Ibn Abdul-Aziz has issued an order to offer humanitarian aid worth US$10 million to the Afghan people, Kuwait's official KUNA news agency reported on Monday.
"The gesture comes as continuation of the kingdom's support for the people in Afghanistan to alleviate their sufferings resulting from the increase in number of refugees at present," the king said in a statement.
The Saudi king has ordered the concerned Saudi authorities to deliver urgent assistance, including foodstuffs, medicines and clothes, directly to needy people in the civil-war-stricken Asian country, KUNA said.
Last Tuesday, Saudi Arabia, the close ally of the United States, cut its ties with Afghanistan's ruling Taliban regime, which is harboring Saudi-born millionaire Osama bin Laden, named by the U.S. as prime suspect of the September 11 terrorist attacks in the U.S..
