FM Spokesman on Italian Prime Minister's China Visit

Italian Prime Minister Giuliano Amato's China visit was a success, and both sides are satisfied with this visit, said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhu Bangzao Thursday.

At a regular press conference Thursday Zhu said during his three-day visit from January 15 to 17, Amato met with or held talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin, Premier Zhu Rongji and Vice Premier Qian Qichen on separate occasions. They had an in- depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern, and reached a consensus on a wide range of issues, Zhu said.

Both sides spoke highly of the sound development of the two countries' cooperation in various fields in recent years, and agreed that Sino-Italian relations have a great potential and broad prospects, and the two countries should promote the exchange of visits, economic and trade cooperation, cultural exchanges and cooperation in the judicial field, including the crackdown on organized crime, Zhu said.

The two countries have come to a consensus on signing relevant agreements, Zhu said.

He said that the two sides agree to continue consulting with each other on major international issues, and maintain good cooperation in the United Nations and other international organizations, so as to help make the new century a century in which people from all countries can enjoy peace and stability, eradicate poverty to achieve common development, and promote exchanges between different civilizations for common progress.
